Success story . 20.04.2022

Story of Selina
I gave my first birth child at home by the village doctor because health facilities were non-functional and not easily accessible so childbirth at health facilities was not even considered as an option. But luckily, she (village doctor) was trained in normal delivery. She had some equipment to conduct delivery. After born my baby did not cry for long time and that village doctor tried in many ways to make my baby cry but her methods of making baby crying was horrible, but finally she (baby) cried. I was not prepared enough to take my second baby. I felt the same risk as six years ago during my first pregnancy. During second time pregnancy I visited to Community Clinic for my antenatal checkup. There the health care provider advised me to visit Mamota supported health center near to my house where skilled person (Midwives) attains the pregnant women like me with cordial behavior. During my 20 weeks of pregnancy, it was on 15 September last year, I came to Sonaroy UHFWC for my ANC checkup. It was a surprised time for me. I heard my baby’s heartbeat with an instrument which I never saw before. My urine, blood all was tested and I was having good advice for the best interest of me and my baby’s health. I went through the delivery room and post-natal care room and found the arrangement for the normal delivery. And that time me and my in-laws decided to deliver my baby in this center. I obtained the rest of my ANC visit from here. Midwife treated me very well and gave me medicine and advised about the balanced food every time. On 17 March 2022 morning, I felt pain and came here for a better treatment. They checked every physical condition. They provided me a birthing ball and advised for exercise using that so that my baby could easily come down. I delivered my second baby without any complications. This time my baby started crying from the beginning. I think it has become possible because I took 3 ANC checkups and took the necessary medicine like folic acid, calcium, vitamin B complex etc, and had all the require tests at the facility. I will advise all other pregnant women in my area to take more then 4 ANC and deliver baby in this health facility. “Mamota project’s interventions such as courtyard meeting with mothers counselling sessions with family and husband and satellite centers held in the neighborhood have given us knowledge and awareness about maternal and newborn services. Now I know how important it is to deliver at a health facility. Times have changed and so should our mindsets”- says mother in-law of Shelina.

I’m from Dhimla village of Padumshahar Union. My husband’s house is in Gazaria Union under Fulchari Upazila. After being confirmed of my pregnancy I came to my father’s house for delivery of my child. One day I heard about the improved quality health check-up of pregnant mothers in govt. fixed satellite clinic. Previously during the satellite clinic service providers from Govt. just asked about the problem and provide some medicine to service receivers. I came to know about Mamota project supported health services from their service providers who used to visit door to door of my neighbor. They have lost of materials to check-up pregnant mothers. They check urine, blood and also examine abdomen using various materials. My mother brought me to Satellite Clinic to check my physical condition. Midwives checked me fully. I was excited hearing my child heartbeat. I cannot express my emotion clearly about that time when I heard my child heartbeat. During my visit in satellite clinic Mamota Project’s Midwife called me to visit in the Mamota supported UHFWC for another checkup with my guardians. That day they delivered very significant massage about premature baby. Me with my mother and other relatives as well as other pregnant women and their family visited the operation theater and pleased to see lots of materials and arrangements for normal delivery. Mamota project revitalized the FWC Management Committee of Ballamjhar after starting the intervention at this union. Union Chairman has become very positive after getting orientation by the project. He expressed his feelings that pregnant mothers used to face tremendous difficulties in accessing health facilities for child delivery. This facility will improve the accessibility to health services for many mothers. They are now able to avail 24/7 delivery care and are no longer deprived of basic primary health care that they need. No body behind from Mamota Service
Swiper community is one of the outcast communities of Bangladesh. They don’t have excess in any places of our main society. They even don’t give excess to eat food sitting on the restaurant. In the health sector they are far behind from taking service. Breaking the silence Mamota project with the help of FWV of Bamondanga delivered two babies in the UHFWC knowing that main societies people will not take it easily. During mid of May of this year one person Sree Durjoy Chandra Basfore came to the UHFWC with his gawky face. He argued that he is one of the Swiper community. He recently thinks that her wife Jharna Rani Basfore become pregnant. This will be their first child and he is very worried because some of their community people died during delivering child. No one help them. Without any hesitation FWV of Bamondanga Jesmin Nahar Nishat and Midwife Rowzatul Zannat take his address and ask him to come in the UHFWC as soon as possible with his wife. One day after Durjoy gathered courage and came to UHFWC for his wife’s first ANC checkup. That was 19 of May in this year. Referral using Mamotar Tori . 15.01.2023

Referral using Mamotar Tori
Mamun remembers precisely what happened on that day. It was 25 September this year, and the midwife of the Arendabari Health & Family Welfare Center declared that his wife Asmaul could not have a normal delivery due to less fetal movement and watery discharge. Her wife admitted 11:30am of the day and referred to higher facility at 3:00pm. She suggested taking her to a hospital and warned that they were running out of time. But the closest hospital from Mamun's village Jigabari was at least a three-hour journey by trawler. He was feeling helpless until one of midwife informed him of a boat service named ‘Mamotar Tori’. The boat stayed at the Jigabari ghat, nearest of the UHFWC. He was charged for the fuel cost only, 10 litter of petrol. He brings it from nearest fuel shop. Not just Mamun, a lot of other residents of Arendabari’s char area are benefitting from the Mamotar Tori service introduced by Mamota Project in collaboration with SKS Foundation and Save the Children in Bangladesh. It’s financed by Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and Save the Children Korea. They named the Mamotar Tori after the river that surrounds the area. The boat has a bed and space for emergency delivery. It can accommodate 10 people along with a patient bed. It also includes medical facilities like emergency oxygen supply, medicine, and first aid. The idea is to keep a medical assistant along with a driver and a helper. When the Mamotar Tori was ready, project started campaigning in markets and public places. So far, they have served five people. Some of them come to facility from their resident char area to UHFWC and some of them taking service to go to UHFWC to nearest hospitals at Gaibandha district. "This project is not dedicated to reduce maternal and infant mortality. The objective of boat service of the project is to provide access to healthcare services," said Sraboni, Midwife of Arendabari UHFWC. However, Asmaul finally return back with a baby girl after 4 days of C-Section at a private hospital in Gaibandha district town. “I thought I will not return back that time. Basically we have very few boat here to go to the nearest hospital or district town. Those boat has their own time and many people cross the river through boat. It is time consuming and not suitable for pregnant mother like me. We have our own boat to serve us during day and night named Mamotar tori. We feel safe to have that.” Asmaul takes three antenatal care check-ups and after return bank she with her baby girl takes 2 postnatal care check-ups from the Arendabari UHFWC. “Me and my child are now following the instructions of Israt Apa, midwife of the Arendabari UHFWC and feeling better day by day and hopefully I will cure shortly.” She added.
